HIV remains a major public health issue that affects millions of people worldwide.
Although the world has made significant progress in recent decades, important global targets for 2020 were not met.
Division, disparity and disregard for human rights are among the failures that allowed HIV to become and remain a global health crisis. Now, COVID-19 is exacerbating inequities and disruptions to services, making the lives of many people living with HIV more challenging.
Mae Ai Health Check
There are many Hill Tribe and migrants living along the Thai - Myanmar border. Many have been living in Thailand for many years. In the past these people were given special ID cards but there are many who have no official papers at all. For many such people who are infected with the HIV virus access to medical services is very difficult. For example, in Bann Pang Nai there are families who have been living there many years those who have been infected with HIV have to pay for medical services.
The Covid-19 pandemic is causing problems for the rural poor living with HIV. Many of whom are agricultural pieceworkers moving from job to job . Because of the lack of tourists due to the pandemic, the demand for fresh agricultural products has declined dramatically over the past 18 months or so and many of these workers have become unemployed.
